A series of waterfalls located on the Xanil River in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas are the Cascadas de Agua Azul (Spanish for “Blue Water waterfall”). They are located 69 kilometres (43 mi) from Palenque, near Mexican Federal Highway 199, in the Municipality of Tumbalá. These waterfalls consist of several cataracts, taken from near the top of the cascading sequence, one after another. The larger cataracts may be as high as 20 feet (6 meters) or so. The water descends into two streams for most of the reach, with small islands in the centre. Water has a high content of calcium carbonate and other minerals, and it encases them in a dense shell-like layer of limestone as it falls on rocks or fallen trees.
